Navratri — Significance of All 9 Days, Colors, and Puja Vidhi

Navratri (नवरात्रि) — meaning "Nine Nights" — is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine manifestations known as Navadurga. Celebrated four times a year, the Sharad Navratri (September-October) is the most popular.

The Nine Forms of Goddess Durga

| Day | Goddess | Color | Significance | |-----|---------|-------|-------------| | Day 1 | Shailputri (शैलपुत्री) | Royal Orange | Daughter of the Mountains; new beginnings | | Day 2 | Brahmacharini (ब्रह्मचारिणी) | White | The ascetic who pursued Lord Shiva through penance | | Day 3 | Chandraghanta (चंद्रघंटा) | Red | The fierce warrior with a crescent moon bell | | Day 4 | Kushmanda (कूष्माण्डा) | Royal Blue | Creator of the universe with her divine smile | | Day 5 | Skandamata (स्कंदमाता) | Yellow | Mother of Kartikeya, the god of war | | Day 6 | Katyayani (कात्यायनी) | Green | The warrior goddess who slayed Mahishasura | | Day 7 | Kalaratri (कालरात्रि) | Grey | The fiercest form, destroyer of darkness | | Day 8 | Mahagauri (महागौरी) | Purple | The goddess of purity and forgiveness | | Day 9 | Siddhidatri (सिद्धिदात्री) | Peacock Green | Bestower of all supernatural powers |

How to Observe Navratri

Fasting Rules: Many devotees observe a strict fast during all nine days. The rules are similar to Ekadashi — avoid grains, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Fruits, sabudana, kuttu ka atta, and milk products are allowed.

Daily Puja Vidhi:

  1. Wake before sunrise, bathe, and wear clean clothes
  2. Light the Akhand Jyoti (eternal flame) on Day 1 — it must burn for all 9 days
  3. Offer red flowers, kumkum, and coconut to the Goddess
  4. Recite the Durga Saptashati (700 verses praising Durga) or the Durga Chalisa
  5. Sing the Aarti of the specific Goddess for that day

Kanya Puja (Ashtami/Navami): On the 8th or 9th day, nine young girls (representing the nine forms) are invited, their feet are washed, and they are offered food and gifts.

Spiritual Significance

The nine nights symbolize the battle between good (Durga) and evil (Mahishasura). Each day's worship purifies a different aspect of the devotee's consciousness, culminating in Vijayadashami (Dussehra) — the day of ultimate victory.
